Choose the Right Career, Not Just the Next Job

A free, two step decision tool for students, graduates and anyone planning their next move. Name what you actually want from a career, then see exactly where hundreds of careers sit on income, security and how future proof they are.

Choosing the right career comes down to two questions: what do you want a career to give you, and what kind of work builds that. Step one helps you name the three things that matter most to you. Step two maps careers across income, job security and future proofing, so you can see where your priorities really live. Work through both and you will know the type of career to aim for, and the kind of work that gets you there.

Step 1 · Career Planning

What do you actually want from a career?

Before you pick a path, get clear on what you want a career to give you. Tick up to three drivers that matter most to you, then mark the single one that matters most. There are no wrong answers, only honest ones.

I want a career that…

Tick up to 3  ·  then mark the one that matters most.

Step 2 · Career Decider Matrix

Where does that career live?

Now take the one driver you marked as most important and find where it sits on the map. Careers are grouped by how you earn (skills and credentials on the left, ownership and capital on the right), by income (top to bottom) and by job security (left to right). The flame marks the most future proof zones, the work that is hardest for AI and automation to replace.

🔥 Why it matters: AI is squeezing the middle. The safest ground is at the edges, hands-on essential work and ownership or value creation. Aim to own it, create it, or do work that needs human hands and heart.

Career planning questions, answered

How do I choose the right career?

Start by naming what you want a career to give you, such as passion, income, security, freedom or impact. Then match those drivers to the kind of work that actually produces them. The Mind Shift Career Decider does this in two steps: you pick your top three drivers, then you locate them on a map of careers organised by income, job security and how future proof the work is.

What are the most future proof careers?

The most future proof careers sit at the edges of the map, not the middle. Hands-on essential work such as skilled trades, healthcare and care work is hard for AI and automation to replace. So is ownership and value creation, such as investing, founding companies and owning intellectual property. Routine knowledge work in the middle is the most exposed to automation.

What does the Career Decider Matrix show?

It maps careers across three dimensions. Left to right shows how you earn, from skills and credentials to ownership and capital. Top to bottom shows income level. And the flame marks the zones that are most resistant to AI and automation. Together this shows you the trade-offs between income, security, qualifications and future proofing for any path you are considering.

What are the top skills for 2030?

According to the World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report 2025, the skills rising fastest in value include AI and data literacy, analytical and creative thinking, resilience and adaptability, curiosity and lifelong learning, leadership and influence, and emotional intelligence. The strongest position combines human skills with technological fluency.

Is the Career Decider tool free?

Yes. The tool is completely free to use, and so is the optional 1:1 consultation with Mind Shift. It is built for students, recent graduates and anyone rethinking their career direction.
